Sthala Purana
Srirangam is the foremost of the 108 Divya Desams and the largest functioning temple complex in the world. According to tradition, the deity of Lord Ranganatha was originally worshipped by Brahma, then by Ikshvaku kings, and later given to Vibhishana by Lord Rama. When Vibhishana carried the idol south, it was consecrated at Srirangam, where it self‑manifested (swayam vyakta) as the eternal abode of Lord Ranganatha. Sri Vadirajaru in Paschima Prabandha praises Srirangam as the crown jewel of Vaishnava kshetras.
