When there was a severe famine in the Mysore state around 1875, he sold nearly 1000KG of gold in the maTa to purchase grains from other places and distribute to the needy. He did this for a long period of time. Hence he is affectionately called "akki-bele" Swamigalu. People from many villages around Sosale also were given food daily. There was a thoobu i. e. a stone pipe from kitchen directly to the outside for people to collect. Really a benevolent swamiji who sold everything and used to keep pattada devaru on plantain leaves and plates for pooja.
This event was predicted by shri vidyAvallabha tIrtharu, more than 60 years before the event occured. When Diwan Poorniah had donated the gold to the maTa, shri vidyAvallabha tIrtharu had said that "sindhu would come and convert your gold to grains and your family would get the blessings". What a mahAn!
Once when Cauvery was in floods, he could not cross the river from sOsale to T. Narasipura to have darshaNa of shri shEsha chandrikAchAryaru. Shri shEsha chandrikAchAryaru appeared in his dream and said that he would facilitate his visit to T Narasipura the next day. When shri vidyAsindhu tIrtharu got to the river in the morning, he felt the river surface was solid and walked on the river and crossed it, had darshaNa of shEsha chandrikAchAryaru and returned to sOsale. This was the greatness of shri vidyAsindhu tIrtharu due to the anugraha of shEsha chandrikAchAryaru.
For the purchase of grains in exchange of gold, shri vidyAshrisindhu tIrtharu had taken the services of one of the highly learned disciples of the maTa. He later annointed him as his successor and named him shri vidyAshrIdhara tIrtharu.
