About Śrī Lakṣmīnātha Tīrtha

Śrī Lakṣmīnātha Tīrtha was ordained the 19th Pīṭhādhipati  by Śrī Lakṣmīvallabha Tīrtha. The saint was well-patronized by kings of his time as can be evinced from the grants received from Tirumala Nayaka of Madurai and Sriranga Raya III of Penukonda. His Holiness was on the Vidyāpīṭha for a period of twenty to twenty-five years and is well-known in tradition to have composed expository notes – Vyākhyāna – on Vyāsatraya viz., Nyāyāmṛta, Tarkatāṇḍava and Tātparya Candrika. It is unfortunate that out of the three, only the one on Nyāyāmṛta has survived till date in fractions. We also further understand that later saints in the tradition – such as Śrī Vidyāśrīdhara Tīrtha – never used to teach Nyāyāmruta to students without the assistance of this saint’s exposition.

While Śrī Lakṣmīvallabha Tīrtha is the Āśrama Guru of Śrī Lakṣmīnātha Tīrtha, the saint has indicated in the Nyāyāmṛta Vyākhyāna that his Vidyā Guru is Śrī Yādavendra Tīrtha – disciple of Śrī Sudhīndra Tīrtha, guru of Śrī Rāghavendra Tīrtha. One of the famous Gṛhasta Śiṣyas of this saint in the lineage of the Śrīmaṭha was Śrī Kundalagiri Suri – whose ancestors hailed from Belur and were presumably connected with the saint’s Guru Śrī Lakṣmīvallabha Tīrtha – who had composed several lucid glosses on different topics.

The saint ordained Śrī Lakṣmīpati Tīrtha to the Pīṭha and attained Haripāda at Śrīranga Kṣetra. While we know from tradition that Śrī Vyāsa Tīrtha did the submission – Samarpaṇĕ – of Tātparya Candrika to Kṣetra Mūrti Lord Śrī Ranganātha and there is monumental evidence to this effect, first of the Śrīimaṭha’s physical emblems in this holy place happens to be the Vṛndāvana of this saint that’s housed in a complex along with his four successors. Hence this revered Svayamvyakta Kṣetra also happens to be the Pañca Vṛndāvana Kṣetra of the Śrīmatha.
