Sthala Purana
The Puri tradition links this shrine with King Indradyumna's preparations for the great Ashvamedha Yajna. Acting on the advice of Narada Maharishi, the king established and worshipped Narasimha before undertaking the sacrifice, giving rise to the name Yajna Narasimha.
The temple preserves both Shanta and Ugra aspects of Narasimha and forms an important part of the sacred geography surrounding Jagannath Puri, Gundicha Temple and Indradyumna Sarovara.
