Sthala Purana
Badrinath, nestled in the Himalayas of Uttarakhand, is one of the eight Swayam Vyakta Kshetras of Lord Vishnu. The presiding deity is Sri Badrinarayana, believed to have manifested on His own (swayam vyakta) beneath the Badri tree to bless devotees. According to legend, Narada performed penance here, and Lord Vishnu meditated in yogic posture. The temple is glorified in Alwar hymns and revered in Madhwa sampradaya as a moksha‑granting kshetra. Adi Shankaracharya rediscovered the temple in the 8th century, reviving its worship.
