What is the importance and significance of doing Vrata and Upavasa?

Answered by Pt. Shri. Raghuttamachar in Kannada

General

Chaturmasya (Vrata) should be observed because it is a Nitya Karma prescribed by the Puranas. It purifies the body and mind, destroys sins, and brings great merit. Worldly-wise, it teaches us to eat only seasonal food, which is healthy. “Vrata” here means giving up certain items like oil, ghee, some foods, comforts, etc., during the four months. Everyone must observe it every year.

Ekadashi should be strictly observed in both pakshas. On Ekadashi, all sins reside in food. “Annam” means anything eaten, not just grains. Hence, complete fasting is prescribed for all—men, women, all ashramas, even during sutaka. Observing Ekadashi destroys sins and grants Lord Hari’s grace.
