What is the correct method for preparing buttermilk (majjige)?
Pt. Shri. Vedavyasacharya
General
The scriptures give a clear guideline:
“Chaturthāmsha jala-yogena dadhimathana jātam dravyāntaram takram.”
Meaning:
- When one-fourth part of water is added to curd and properly churned,
it becomes buttermilk (takra).
Important understanding:
- Simply adding a small quantity of water randomly does not make it buttermilk
- It must follow the proper proportion
Example:
- If you want to prepare 1 glass of buttermilk:
- Take ¾ glass curd
- Add ¼ glass water
- Mix/churn properly
Then it is correctly called buttermilk as per scripture.
Conclusion:
- Follow the 1:4 ratio (water = one-fourth of curd)
- Proper preparation ensures it is valid as “takra”
- This is especially important during vrata (observances) like Chaturmasya
