On what occasions should the Yajnopavita be changed according to Shastra?
Pt. Shri. Vedavyasacharya
General
The Smriti Muktavali gives guidance through the following statements:
“Jātaśauche mṛtaśauche gate māse tṛtīyake, upākarmani chotsarge jīrṇa tantum visarjayet.”
“Upākarmani sūtānte yāte māse chatuṣṭaye, dhṛtvā nūtānī sūtrāṇi purāṇāni visarjayet.”
Meaning and Explanation:
The sacred thread should be changed in the following situations:
- After Jāta Śaucha (birth impurity)
- After Mṛta Śaucha (death impurity)
- On the day when purity is regained, a new Yajñopavīta must be worn
- During Upakarma and Utsarga
- These are annual Vedic rituals, and wearing a new thread is mandatory
Regular Replacement (even without impurity):
- One statement says after 3 months
- Another says after 4 months
Conclusion:
- Change after birth or death impurity
- Change during Upakarma / Utsarga
- Otherwise, change once every 3–4 months
- Always discard the old and worn-out thread and wear a new one
