Is it appropriate to make sounds like ‘surrr surrr’ while drinking Teertha and Payasa?

Pt. Shri. Vedavyasacharya

General

When accepting holy water or drinking payasam, ghee, milk, or rasam, some people make “sur sur” sounds while drinking.

The Smriti Muktavali warns:

“Drinking holy water, ghee, payasam, or milk with sound is equivalent to drinking alcohol.”

This means:

  • When consuming any liquid—holy water, milk, ghee, payasam, or rasam—it should be done silently, without making any noises.
  • Making sounds while drinking is considered equivalent to drinking alcohol.
  • The sin associated with drinking alcohol is said to occur if one drinks with sounds.

Therefore, the elders instruct that we should always accept and drink liquids quietly, without making any “sur sur” or similar noises.
