If one is unable to perform the Head-Tonsuring ceremony of one's child on time, what alternate can be done? This is a common issue for people living abroad and unable to visit India on-time to perform this Ceremony.

Answered By Pt Sri Pranesh Achar (Ananda Rangan)

General

According to the Garga Smṛti, Chaula Karma may be performed in the third year, fifth year, or seventh year from birth.

The verse states:

“Tṛtīye pañcame vātha saptame janmataḥ śeṣaḥ |
Garbha-dvā chavula-karma kuryād iti prāha pitāmahaḥ ||”

This means that if it is not performed in the third year, it may be done in the fifth year, and if not then, it may be done in the seventh year.

Even if one is living in a different place or country, and circumstances are not favorable, the ceremony can be performed at any convenient time within this age limit.

Therefore, after considering convenience and circumstances, there is flexibility to perform Chaula Karma up to the seventh year of age.
