Can a lamp be lit using another?

Pt. Shri. Vedavyasacharya

Pooja

We light one lamp, and then use that same lamp to light another lamp. But the scriptures say this should not be done.

Especially during Karthika month, when Laksha Deepotsava is performed in mathas, temples, and homes, many people unknowingly do this.

There is a statement from the Linga Purana:

“Dīpena dīpaṁ prajvālya daridro vyādhito bhavet.”

Meaning:

If one lamp is used to light another lamp,

It may lead to poverty (daridrya) and illness (vyadhi).

Guidance from Shastra

Do not light one lamp from another lamp

Instead, use a separate source like:

Tulasi stick (Tulasi kaṣṭa)

Matchstick or proper lighting source

Each lamp should be lit independently
