According to tradition, which items should not be served directly into the hands during meals?

Pt. Shri. Vedavyasacharya

Food / Eating

While serving food, items like salt, payasam, dal (sambar), ghee, oil, and other dishes should not be served by hand. Elders advise that they should always be served using a ladle or spoon.

Why is this important? Is there any proof?

Yes, scriptures give clear guidance.

The Atri Smriti says:

“If items like salt and other dishes are served by hand, the person serving does not get any merit, and the person eating incurs sin.”

This means:

  • We serve food to gain punya (merit).
  • But if we serve with our hands, no merit is gained.
  • Instead, the person eating may incur sin (kilbisha).

The Kurma Purana further states:

“Food items like water, payasam, dal, ghee, and salt served by hand should not be consumed. Eating such food is equal to eating beef.”

Conclusion:

  • Food items should never be served by hand.
  • Always use a ladle or spoon while serving.
  • This ensures purity, respect, and proper merit in the act of serving food.
