According to Shastra, why is curd not recommended at night? And what is the Pramana for it?
Pt. Shri. Vedavyasacharya
Food / Eating
Yes, there is.
The Skanda Purana (Kashi Khanda) states:
“Rātrau na dadhi bhoktavyam”
Meaning: Curd should not be eaten at night.
Another verse also says:
“Rātrau cha dadhi bhakshanam prayatnena vivarjayet”
Meaning: One should carefully avoid eating curd at night.
Why is curd avoided at night?
Though the exact reason is not always explicitly stated, traditionally it is understood that:
- Eating curd at night may increase phlegm (kapha)
- It may cause cold or throat issues
- It can lead to heaviness and excess sleep
- This may disturb early morning prayers and spiritual practices
What should be taken instead?
- Instead of curd, it is recommended to take buttermilk, which is lighter and easier to digest.
Conclusion:
- Avoid curd at night as per scriptures
- Prefer buttermilk if needed
- This helps maintain health and supports spiritual discipline
