Shri Hanumath Vrata is an annual Hindu observance dedicated to worshipping Lord Hanuman. It is primarily celebrated in South India on the 13th day (Trayodashi) of the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) of the lunar month of Margashira. The Vrata is observed to seek Lord Hanuman's blessings for good health, peace, prosperity, and the removal of obstacles.
Significance and origin
Legend of the Pandavas: The origin of this Vrata is described in the Bhavishyottara Purana. When the Pandavas were struggling during their exile, Sage Vedavyasa advised them to perform the Hanumath Vrata.
Arjuna's lesson: The Vrata is linked to a legend where Arjuna neglected the significance of Lord Hanuman, who sat on the emblem of his chariot. Following this, the Pandavas were forced into a 13-year exile. Performing this Vrata helped them overcome their struggles.
Divine guidance: Draupadi performed the Vrata under the guidance of Lord Krishna to end their miseries. Lord Rama is also believed to have performed this Vrata to honor Hanuman.
